Before leaving:

  • Notify necessary entities of your change in address:

    • Friends and relatives

    • Post Office

    • Banking/Credit card accounts

    • Insurance companies: Life, Health, Fire & Auto

    • Newspaper/magazine subscriptions

  • Disconnect utilities, request refunds on any deposits made

  • Transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays, etc. (Can ask doctor or dentist for referrals in new location)

  • Transfer church, clubs, or civic organizations memberships and request letters of introductions


Preparing for the move:

  • Make arrangements for moving personal belongings with moving company or contact a truck rental company if moving yourself

  • Make travel/care arrangements for children

  • Make travel/care arrangements for pets


Moving Day:

  • Double check all closets, drawers, cabinets, and shelves to make sure they are empty

  • Leave all keys and remotes needed by new tenant or owner with a REALTOR or neighbor, including: house keys, shed keys, garage door opener, etc.

  • Carry enough cash or traveler’s checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until banking connections in the new destination are acquired

  • Carry jewelry and important documents with you or use registered mail

  • Notify a close relative or friend of travel arrangements including route and overnight stops


New Home:

  • Obtain a certified check or cashier’s check necessary for closing the real estate transaction

  • Check on service connection of telephone, gas, electricity, and water

  • Have appliances checked

  • Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater, incinerator, and furnace


You’re moved in, yay! Now what?

  • Ask mailman or post office for mail that may be waiting for your arrival

  • Change the address on your driver’s license or apply for state driver’s license

  • Register car within five days after arrival in state or you may have to pay a penalty

  • Obtain city inspection sticker and transfer motor club membership

  • Visit city offices and register to vote

  • Register children for school
