Moving Checklist
Before leaving:

Notify necessary entities of your change in address:

Friends and relatives

Post Office
-
Banking/Credit card accounts

Insurance companies: Life, Health, Fire & Auto

Newspaper/magazine subscriptions

Disconnect utilities, request refunds on any deposits made

Transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays, etc. (Can ask doctor or dentist for referrals in new location)

Transfer church, clubs, or civic organizations memberships and request letters of introductions
Preparing for the move:

Make arrangements for moving personal belongings with moving company or contact a truck rental company if moving yourself

Make travel/care arrangements for children

Make travel/care arrangements for pets
Moving Day:

Double check all closets, drawers, cabinets, and shelves to make sure they are empty

Leave all keys and remotes needed by new tenant or owner with a REALTOR or neighbor, including: house keys, shed keys, garage door opener, etc.

Carry enough cash or traveler’s checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until banking connections in the new destination are acquired

Carry jewelry and important documents with you or use registered mail

Notify a close relative or friend of travel arrangements including route and overnight stops
New Home:

Obtain a certified check or cashier’s check necessary for closing the real estate transaction

Check on service connection of telephone, gas, electricity, and water

Have appliances checked

Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater, incinerator, and furnace
You’re moved in, yay! Now what?

Ask mailman or post office for mail that may be waiting for your arrival

Change the address on your driver’s license or apply for state driver’s license

Register car within five days after arrival in state or you may have to pay a penalty

Obtain city inspection sticker and transfer motor club membership

Visit city offices and register to vote

Register children for school
